2014 Mazda2 – Sporty handling and nimble movements from an economical little hatchback

Mazda revealed its all-new 2016 Mazda2 model in July, and even as the newly redesigned vehicle may intrigue small car owners, it will be some time before it arrives in dealerships. Luckily, the 2014 version is available, and consumers may find this economical and sporty hatchback to provide quite a bit of fun for such an affordable price.

Several vehicles in the automaker’s lineup have made the transition from the so-called smiling Mazda, to incorporating the new KODO: Soul of Motion design language. However, even as the new Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-5 have been fully redesigned, the 2014 Mazda2 remains incredibly charming with a grilled that constantly appears to be grinning. It seems to fit the subcompact quite well, considering that it is both small and light (a maximum of 1,075 kg), and provides precise and responsive handling that gives the “2” an overall sporty vibe. The hatchback feels quick and nimble as a result, which especially comes in handy when driving in the city, or getting in and out of tight parking spaces.

A 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine generating 100-horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque is offered with the 2014 model. Including front-wheel drive, Mazda’s subcompact is coupled to a standard 5-speed manual transmission, though a 4-speed automatic is optional with the GX and GS trim. The 2014 Mazda2 also includes an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Brake Assist, and traction and stability control, all of which are standard on both Mazda2 models.

Consumers should also note the low consumption ratings: 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, and 5.6 when on the highway when equipped with the manual transmission. With the automatic, the 2014 Mazda2 will offer fuel economy ratings of 7.1/5.8 litres per 100 kilometres (city/highway), and of course only regular fuel is required for the 42.8 litre tank.

The hatchback’s interior also feels like a breath of fresh in that it is minimalistic, with simple and easy-to-find and use controls. The rear seats can be folded with a 60/40 split as well, increasing cargo volume from 377 to 787 litres. As for standard features, the base GX trim, available from $14,450 MSRP, will be equipped with elements like power door locks, a 12-volt power outlet, MP3 functionality, and USB and auxiliary input.

When opting for the top GS trim, buyers can also benefit from additional features like cruise control, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, 6 speakers, sporty cloth upholstery with red piping and stitching for the seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, all of which are standard on this model. Remote keyless entry and air conditioning are also included, and consumers can get some of these features with the Convenience Package on the base GX model.

Small car buyers need not wait for the 2016 hatchback to arrive. The 2014 Mazda2 is available now, and in addition to providing sporty handling, nimble agility and an affordable base price, it is also the last generation to offer the “smiling” grille that adds to the charm and overall personality of the car.
